ANNOTATION: From 1981 to 1990, the number of inmates aged 55 or older more than doubled in the United States. The cost of incarcerating a geriatric prisoner is 3 times that of a regular prisoner. This report focuses upon assessing the long-term needs of Florida's older prison inmates. Contents include: the effects of aging; characteristics of the elder inmate; special needs of the elderly inmate; planning (with recommendation from the National Institute of Corrections); elderly inmate services; and concluding observations and recommendations.
