ANNOTATION: Results from an analysis of available data concerning the impact of the Three Strikes and You're Out criminal sentencing law of California are presented. Sections of this report are: introduction; background -- rationale and key features; the legal evolution of the Three Strikes law; impact of the law on the criminal justice system; impact of the law on public safety; and conclusion -- the future of the law. The Three Strikes law has resulted in a growing and aging prison population, at a cost of about one half billion dollars, with little to modest impact on public safety.
