Findings from research are presented about: the progressing levels of safety in U.S. jails and prisons; riots; staff homicides and escapes; assaults; sexual assaults; the likelihood of experiencing assault or sexual assault in correctional facilities versus the community-at-large; and the number of inmates in protective custody, and administrative segregation; and percentages of inmates at correctional security levels in the U.S.—minimum, medium, and maximum.
