SIM - Operational Assessment Admin Role Training

Strategic inmate management (SIM) is the intentional integration of the elements of Inmate Behavior Management and the principles and strategies of Direct Supervision as a unified operational philosophy. It is an evolution of the Direct Supervision and Inmate Behavior Management training and assistance NIC has previously offered. The goal of this program is to prepare agency leaders for their role in ensuring the success of the role in ensuring the success of effective inmate management regardless of the physical plant layout. 

The administration’s role includes: 

1. Thoroughly understanding strategic inmate management – merely attending this program will not be sufficient.  You will need to continue to get input from staff, provide ongoing leadership, and monitoring operations to verify implementation.
2. Ensuring all staff roles and operations are fully aligned with strategic inmate management
- While we may tend to focus on officers and perhaps supervisors, we also need to remember the importance of support staff roles and contracted staff.  You may need to review and revise any current contracts.
3. Making decisions within the framework of strategic inmate management – we will discuss this in great deal throughout the program, but it is important to remember that your decision-making continues well-beyond implementation.

4. Managing staff resistance to strategic inmate management – the resistance may focus on the implementation of SIM, but we also need to consider that resistance may be merely a change in the operation.

5. Support consistent organizational speech – it is critical that the administration and the staff are unified in their language and direction.
6. Actively demonstrating commitment to strategic inmate management - This is accomplished by modeling the behavior you expect from other.
