The Jail System

Rhode Island has a combined prison-jail system.

The Prison System

The Rhode Island Department of Corrections is a unified system, there are no county jails. The Department operates seven housing facilities and employs 1,400 people. As of December 31, 2015, the Rhode Island prison population was 3,248.

The Community Corrections System

As of December 2014, 24,393 offenders were under Adult Probation and Parole, with 8,447 under active supervision.

The Jail System

Pennsylvania has 67 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 69 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 36,720 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Pennsylvania prison population was 49,858. The Pennsylvania DOC operates 25 state correctional institutions and one boot camp. The agency has approximately 15,000 employees and an annual budget of $2.5 billion.

The Community Corrections System

As of December 31, 2015, there were 112,351 offenders on parole and 183,868 probationers.

The Jail System

Oregon has 36 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 37 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 5,630 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Oregon prison population was 15,245. As of January 2017, the Oregon Department of Corrections had 4,526 employees and a budget for the FY2015-17 biennium of $1.6 billion.

The Community Corrections System

As of January 2017, there were 15,304 felony probationers and 13,337 post-prison offenders under community supervision.

The Jail System

Oklahoma has 77 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 88 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 12,670 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Oklahoma prison population was 28,547. The Oklahoma DOC actual expenditures for FY2015 were $515 million with a staff of 3,852.

The Community Corrections System

As of December 31, 2015, Oklahoma had 31,281 probationers and 2,116 parolees.

The Jail System

Ohio has 88 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 106 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 18,190 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Ohio prison population was 52,233. As of January 2017, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction employed 12,242 staff.

The Community Corrections System

The Ohio Adult Parole Authority had 37,020 offenders under supervision in January 2017. As of Dec. 31, 2015, there were 243,710 adults on probation.

The Jail System

North Dakota has 53 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 30 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 1,230 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the North Dakota prison population was 1,795. The Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation operates four state run facilities. The Department had a budget of $223 million.

The Community Corrections System

As of Dec. 31, 2014, there were 6,303 adults on probation and 644 adults on parole.

The Jail System

North Carolina has 100 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 102 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 18,520 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the North Carolina prison population was 36,617. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety operates 56 adult and juvenile facilities.

The Community Corrections System

There were 84,098 probationers and 13,784 post release/parolees under the supervision of the Department of Public Safety on December 2016.

The Jail System

New York has 58 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 75 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 26,950 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the New York prison population was 51,727. The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision operates 54 state facilities. As of January 1, 2017, the Department employed a facility security staff of 19,250.

The Jail System

New Mexico has 33 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 42 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 8,900 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the New Mexico prison population was 7,169. The New Mexico Corrections Department operates six state facilities and five private prisons. The Department's operating budget for FY2015 was approximately $301 million.

The Jail System

New Jersey has 21 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 22 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 15,235 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the New Jersey prison population was 20,489. The New Jersey Department of Corrections managed 12 facilities, with a budget of approximately $971 million.

The Community Corrections System

As of Dec. 31, 2015, there were 136,137 adults on probation and 15,180 adults on parole.
