Tribal Crime Data Collection Activities, 2021

This report is the 11th in a series that began in 2011 to meet the reporting requirements of the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010 (TLOA). It describes activities by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to collect and improve data on crime and justice in Indian country. It summarizes funding to enhance tribal participation in national records and information systems and highlights data collection activities covering tribal populations.

Mortality in State and Federal Prisons, 2001-2018 - Statistical Tables (2021)

This report presents detailed statistical tables on mortality in state and federal prisons. It provides information on cause of death; decedent characteristics, such as age, gender, and race or ethnicity; and mortality rates of inmate populations, compared to the general U.S. adult population. The report is based on BJS’s annual Mortality in Correctional Institutions data collection, which obtains information on persons who died while in the physical custody of state departments of corrections.

U.S. Sentencing Commission Compassionate Release Data Report (2021)

This report provides an analysis of the compassionate release motions filed with the courts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data in this report is limited to motions decided by the courts during calendar years 2020 and 2021 (January 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021) for which the Commission received or obtained court documentation and completed its analysis by August 31, 2021.

Racial Equity and Criminal Justice Risk Assessment (2021)

Racial and ethnic disparity is a pervasive characteristic of the American criminal justice system. Criminal justice stakeholders must seriously consider concerns about racial disparity, as well as the empirical evidence and policy implications surrounding the issue, to determine the future direction of risk assessment practices.

Historically called domestic violence, intimate partner violence describes physical, sexual, or psychological harm by a current or former intimate partner or spouse. Types of intimate partner violence include physical violence, sexual violence, threats of physical or sexual violence, psychological/emotional violence, and stalking.

Research on the Effectiveness of Pretrial Electronic Monitoring (2019)

This paper discusses the origins and history of Electronic Monitoring and the literature concerning its effects on pretrial outcomes, such as failure to appear (FTA), re-arrest for a new crime while on release, or technical violations, such as curfew violations, unauthorized absences, or tampering with EM equipment. This paper does not address EM imposed after conviction. Research has found that individuals subject to EM behave differently in pre and post-trial settings.
