Juveniles in Residential Placement, 2015 (2018)

The 2015 Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP) shows that the number of youth in placement continues to decline. Between 2006 and 2015, nearly 9 in 10 states cut their rates by half or more. The overall number of youth in residential placement decreased 54% to 48,043 in 2015, its lowest level since the data collection began in 1997 when 105,055 youth were held in out-of-home placement” (p. 1).

The development and evaluation of a mindfulness-based intervention for incarcerated young men (2017)

There is considerable evidence that mindfulness-based interventions help in the treatment of psychological and emotional distress. Incarcerated young men are known to experience difficulties in these areas. However, the utility of mindfulness-based interventions among incarcerated young men remains largely unknown. This thesis set out to explore mindfulness for young men, aged 18-21 years, housed at Her Majesty’s Young Offender Institute in Polmont, Scotland (p. 1).

The descriptions review their intended purposes, administration formats, administration requirements, age ranges, samples on which they have been validated, and available evidence of their psychometric reliability and validity (p. 1).

Youth Incarceration, Health, and Length of Stay (2017)

Presently, advocates for length of stay reform rely on two primary arguments: recidivism and costs of confinement. This Article argues that this framing misses a critical component, as a better understanding of the linkages between length of stay, health, and mental health are essential for achieving the foundational goals of the juvenile justice system—i.e., rehabilitation, decreased recidivism, and improved community reintegration (p. 45).

Decriminalizing Childhood (2017)

This Article considers legislative decriminalization of juvenile misconduct, an underutilized method for juvenile justice reform (p. 5).
