Gangs (Security Threat Groups)

The FBI is dedicated to disrupting and dismantling the most significant gangs through intelligence-driven investigations and initiatives and partnerships such as Safe Streets Task Forces, the National Gang Intelligence Center, and Transnational Anti-Gang Task Forces.

The National Gang Center (NGC) is a project funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), the Office of Justice Programs (OJP), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

The Violent Gang Safe Streets Task Force is the vehicle through which all of the federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies collaboratively address the violent crime plaguing communities.

In the first article in this series, the reasons why intelligence gathering in correctional facilities is needed was discussed: the growing number of inmates with ties to drug cartels, gangs, extremist groups and other security threat groups. These inmates not only threaten facility security and correctional officer safety; they also represent an opportunity for correctional officers to work with their counterparts outside the facility to prevent and solve violent crimes.
