The Jail System

Massachusetts has 14 counties of which 7 are geographical census areas. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 18 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 10,350 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Massachusetts prison population was 9,922. For FY2013 the Department had a budget of $546 million and employed 5,233 FTE's.

The Community Corrections System

The Office of the Commissioner of Probation under the state judicial branch supervises approximately 80,000 probationers. In 2014, there were 2,315 offenders released to parole supervision.
