The Jail System

New Mexico has 33 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 42 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 8,900 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the New Mexico prison population was 7,169. The New Mexico Corrections Department operates six state facilities and five private prisons. The Department's operating budget for FY2015 was approximately $301 million.

The Community Corrections System

The New Mexico Corrections Department, Probation & Parole Division supervised over 17,000 offenders during FY2015.
