The Jail System

Texas has 254 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 321 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 66,210 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Texas prison population was 163,909. The TDCJ operates state prisons, state jails, parole services, and provides certain oversight of community supervision (previously know as adult probation). The Department's annual budget was over $3.4 billion.

The Community Corrections System

As of August 31, 2015, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice supervised 114,173 parolees, and 382,714 offenders were under community supervision (formerly called adult probation).
