The Jail System

Washington has 39 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 68 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 12,150 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Washington prison population was 18,284. As of December 31, 2016 the Washington Department of Corrections is operating 12 prisons and 16 work release facilities. The proposed corrections budget for FY2017-2019 biennium is $1.882 billion. In FY2015, the average daily cost per offender was $91.76.

The Community Corrections System

At the end of December 2016, the Department of Corrections' Community Corrections Division supervised 17,689 active cases and 12,329 inactive cases.
