The Prison and Jail System

Alaska has a unified system which means there is an integrated state-level prison and jail system. There are six states with unified systems. They are: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

As of December 31, 2016, Alaska has 19 boroughs plus 10 geographical census areas.There are 12 prison facilities and 15 locally operated jails.

The jail population is 306, and the prison population is 4,434. There are 1,871 staff positions with a budget of $317 million.

The Community Corrections System

As of December 31, 2016, the Alaska's community corrections population was 6,621 under probation and 1,812 under parole.
