The Prison and Jail System
Hawaii has a unified system which means there is an integrated state-level prison and jail system. There are six states with unified systems. They are: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
As of December 31, 2016, Hawaii has 5 counties with 9 facilities and an incarcerated population of 5,602. There are 1,276 staff positions with a budget of $211 million.
The Community Corrections System
As of December 31, 2016, the Hawaii's community corrections population was 20,516 under probation and 1,367 under parole.
