The Prison and Jail System
Rhode Island has a unified system which means there is an integrated state-level prison and jail system. There are six states with unified systems. They are: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
As of December 31, 2016, Rhode Island has 5 counties and 7 facilities with an incarcerated population of 3,103. There are 1,419 staff positions with a budget of $218 million.
The Community Corrections System
As of December 31, 2016, Rhode Island's community corrections population was 22,781 under probation and 460 under parole.
