The Prison and Jail System
Vermont has a unified system which means there is an integrated state-level prison and jail system. There are six states with unified systems. They are: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
As of December 31, 2016, Vermont has 14 counties and 8 facilities with an incarcerated population of 1,735. There are 1,020 staff positions with a budget of $155 million.
The Community Corrections System
As of December 31, 2016, Vermont's community corrections population was 4,904 under probation and 935 under parole.
