As of December 31, 2017, the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of State of Georgia correctional authorities was 66,146 located in 56 state prisons and held in the custody of private prisons or local jails. The Georgia Department of Corrections had a staff of 9,779 employees and budget of $1.23 billion.

The Community Corrections System

As of December 31, 2017, the Georgia community corrections population was 418,790 under probation and 21,065 under parole.

The data on prison population and incarcerate rate come from the Prisoner in 2017 report released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). That report includes the count of prisoners in the unified systems of Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Violent and property crime rates are provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

The number of counties per state comes from the United States Census Bureau.
