As of December 31, 2017, the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of State of Kentucky correctional authorities was 23,539 located in 12 state prisons and held in the custody of private prisons or local jails. The Kentucky Department of Corrections had a staff of 3846 employees and budget of $570 million.

As of December 31, 2017, the state of Kentucky community corrections population was 51,014 under probation and 16,339 under parole.

The data on prison population and incarcerate rate come from the Prisoner in 2017 report released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). That report includes the count of prisoners in the unified systems of Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Violent and property crime rates are provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
The number of counties per state comes from the United States Census Bureau.
