The Jail and Prison System
Alaska has a unified system which means there is an integrated state-level prison and jail system. There are six states with unified systems. They are: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
As of December 31, 2019 , Alaska has 19 boroughs plus 10 geographical census areas. The total jail population in 2019 was 90.
As of December 31, 2019, the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of the State of Alaska correctional authorities was 1,782 located in 12 prison facilities, 15 locally operated jails, and held in the custody of private prisons. The Alaska Department of Corrections had a budget of $331,107.50.

The data on prison population and incarcerate rate come from the Prisoner in 2019 report released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). The report includes the count of prisoners in the unified systems of Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Violent and property crime rates are provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
The number of counties per state comes from the United States Census Bureau.
