The Prison and Jail System
Rhode Island has a unified system which means there is an integrated state-level prison and jail system. There are six states with unified systems. They are: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
As of December 31, 2020, Rhode Island has 5 counties. The number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of the State of Rhode Island correctional authorities was 2,227 located in 6 state prisons and held in custody of private prisons or local jails. There are 1,400 staff positions with a budget of $257,701,439.
The Community Corrections System
As of December 31, 2020, Rhode Island's community corrections population was 17,805 under probation and 619 under parole.
