Webinar Summary:

Compared to the general population, the prevalence of HIV infection is significantly higher within the correctional environment due to a variety of factors. CDR Drew Swigart and LCDR Marinda Thomas-LePage are board-certified clinical pharmacists who both hold AAHIVP credentialing and specialize in the management of HIV infection within the incarcerated population of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). During this presentation they will discuss strategies and best-practices employed by the BOP for HIV screening and treatment that consistently results in 90% of patients achieving treatment goals for viral control.

  1. Discuss strategies for appropriate HIV screening in the correctional setting.
  2. Apply guidelines for selection of first-line antiretroviral therapy regimens for incarcerated adults.

  • Commander Drew Swigart, PharmD, BCACP, NCPS, AAHIVP

    Drew Swigart

    Drew is an advanced practice pharmacist who is currently serving the Federal Bureau of Prisons as a member of the PHS Commissioned Corps. After graduating from Wilkes University in 2007, he began his professional career as a retail pharmacist with CVS/Pharmacy. In 2011, CDR Swigart left his position as a CVS/Pharmacy Manager to pursue a career with the Bureau of Prisons, and is currently stationed at USP Lewisburg in Lewisburg, PA. As an Advanced Practice Pharmacist, CDR Swigart provides chronic disease-state management to adults in custody at his home institution as well as nationally as one of the FBOP’s Regional Clinical Consultants for HIV.

    B. Marinda Thomas-LePage

    LCDR B. Marinda Thomas-LePage is a clinical pharmacist at FCC-Butner where she has worked for 11 years; she has been keenly focusing on infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship for the past few years. Prior to commissioning to the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, she worked as a pharmacist at the Naval Hospital Pensacola (NHP) for over 2.5 years after serving as an active-duty Naval Pharmacy Officer for over 3 years at NHP. 

    LCDR Thomas-LePage has a master’s degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine specializing in medical microbiology and immunology. Returning to her alma mater, the University of Georgia where she had received a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and a minor in poultry science from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, she received the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She has achieved certification as an AAHIV pharmacist and board certification in Infectious Disease pharmacy. 

    Apart from work, she enjoys learning Spanish and American Sign Language, singing in choirs, caring for animals, hiking, bicycling, and roller-skating.
