In 2000, NIC funded a University of Cincinnati study on custody classification in women's prisons. It revealed that 36 states lacked validated classification systems for women, leading to potential over-classification nationwide.
This study prompted the creation of the WRNA—the only validated, peer-reviewed risk/needs assessment tailored specifically for justice-involved women.
The WRNA is described in detail on its overview page.
