The Department of Education’s (ED) office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) has a fact sheet on the new Fresh Start Program. The Fresh Start Program is a one-time, temporary program that offers special benefits for borrowers (including incarcerated individuals) with defaulted federal student loans; it provides some benefits, such as restoring access to federal student aid grants and post-release loans. Justice-involved individuals have to actively sign up to participate in the program.
