Indian Country Corrections

Ute Mountain Chief Ignacio entrance

Indian Country comprises lands held in trust for tribes or their members. Tribal justice systems encompass corrections, courts, probation, and law enforcement. Correction services play a critical role in public safety, reentry, and recidivism reduction.

Both tribes and the Bureau of Indian Affairs oversee corrections operations, ensuring compliance with safety and management standards. Correction workers must address staffing, risk management, policy development, and facility maintenance.

This page provides resources to support Indian Country Corrections in maintaining security, efficiency, and rehabilitation efforts.

A special thanks goes to the Chief Ignacio Justice Center for the photograph.
