The Jail System

Alabama has 67 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 110 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 15,580 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Alabama prison population was 30,810. In FY2015, the Alabama Department of Corrections employed a staff of 3,783 in 16 major correctional facilities and 12 community-based facilities. Expenditures for FY2015 totaled $457 million.

The Community Corrections System

The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles supervised 54,695 probationers and 9,852 parolees through 61 field offices throughout the state in FY2016. The daily cost of supervising an offender on probation or parole was $2.32.
