Missouri has 115 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 104 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 11,430 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the Missouri prison population was 32,330. The Missouri Department of Corrections operates 21 correctional facilities. The Department's total budget for FY2016 was $710 million.

The Community Corrections System

The Missouri Board of Probation and Parole, an agency within the Department of Corrections, supervised 40,235 felony probationers and 15,288 parolees at the end of 2015.
