The Jail System

New York has 58 counties. According to surveys completed in 2013, there are 75 jail and adult detention facilities, with a population of 26,950 inmates.

The Prison System

As of December 31, 2015, the New York prison population was 51,727. The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision operates 54 state facilities. As of January 1, 2017, the Department employed a facility security staff of 19,250.

The Community Corrections System

As of Dec. 31, 2015, there were 100,996 adults on probation. The New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision's Division of Parole currently supervises approximately 45,000 parolees.
