The Prison System
As of December 31, 2017, the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of State of Maryland correctional authorities was 20,009 located in 17 state prisons and held in the custody of private prisons or local jails. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Recruitment had a staff of 6,703 employees and budget of $793 million.
The Community Corrections System
As of December 31, 2017, the Maryland community corrections population was 71,352 under probation and 10,338 under parole.

The data on prison population and incarcerate rate come from the Prisoner in 2017 report released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). That report includes the count of prisoners in the unified systems of Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Violent and property crime rates are provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
The number of counties per state comes from the United States Census Bureau.
