The Prison and Jail System
Vermont has a unified system which means there is an integrated state-level prison and jail system. There are six states with unified systems. They are: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
As of December 31, 2017, Vermont has 14 counties and 8 facilities with an incarcerated population of 1,333. There are 1,021 staff positions with a budget of $156,984,372 million.
The Community Corrections System
As of December 31, 2017, Vermont's community corrections population was 4,454 under probation and 761 under parole.

The data on prison population and incarcerate rate come from the Prisoner in 2017 report released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). That report includes the count of prisoners in the unified systems of Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Violent and property crime rates are provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
The number of counties per state comes from the United States Census Bureau.
