As of December 31, 2019, the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of South Dakota correctional authorities was 3,801 located in 6 state prisons and held in custody of private prisons or local jails. State operated facilities had a staff of 756 employees and budget of $147,395,991.
The Community Corrections System
As of December 31, 2019, South Dakota's community corrections population was 5,424 under probation and 3,440 under parole.
