The Role of Gangs in the Social Order of Prisons

Perspectives that emphasize the role of deprivation during incarceration point to the role of the inmate code in producing order. Others point specifically to the role of gangs in producing order in prison. A key element in producing and maintaining order in prison is the provision and control of illegal commodities and services. Some claim that the significance of gangs extends beyond the status hierarchy and is at the core of social order in prisons.
