The North Carolina Jail Administrators’ Association Symposium, held on Thursday, April 16 in Greensboro, North Carolina, served North Carolina sheriffs. During the symposium, the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) provided an overview of the available programs and services it offers, and Panda Adkins, Director of the Jails Justice Support Center (JJSC), provided an overview of services available through the JJSC.  In partnership, NIC and JJSC delivered the following two workshops for sheriffs, chief deputies, state jail administrators, and their seconds-in-command:

  • “Harnessing Leadership and Culture: The Pillars of Effective Jail Management”
  • “The Jails and Justice Support Center: The Role of Leadership and Culture in Addressing Substance Use Disorder, Mental Health, and Use of Force”

Sheriff Jerry Clayton (retired), Technical Resource Provider, facilitated both sessions. Approximately 50 jail administrators from across North Carolina attended. Participants were described as attentive and actively engaged, particularly during breakout sessions.

Feedback from Captain Richard Adams, Training Coordinator for the NC Jail Administrators’ Association and Iredell County Detention Center, indicated that attendees enjoyed the sessions and found them interactive, informative, and practical, with content they could apply in their own facilities.
