Library and Information Center Collections
The NIC Library and Information Center maintain several specialized collections, including corrections-related materials, evidence-based research, and resources published both by NIC and a variety of peer-reviewed, authoritative sources.
The Information Center represents NIC’s online publications database and archive. The collection contains unpublished, operations-oriented resources developed by correctional agencies for use by corrections staff. Items such as correctional policies, procedure manuals, reports, newsletters, and training materials are also available. Cataloged resources are supplemented by serial literature, database access, and agency documentation such as annual reports.
The Robert J. Kutak Library is located at the National Corrections Academy in Aurora, Colorado, and houses NIC’s print publications and rare documents that have not been digitized. The collection includes historical documents, reference materials, and corrections curricula.
Prison Rape Elimination Act Collection
The landmark legislative mandate (42 USC 156045 SEC. 5) known as the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) established within NIC “a national clearinghouse for the provision of information and assistance to federal, state, and local authorities responsible for the prevention, investigation, and punishment of instances of prison rape.” Since PREA was made into law, NIC has developed and partnered with other federal agencies and organizations to make access to PREA-related resources available to corrections staff. The NIC Library and Information Center in conjunction with the NIC Learn Center offer a comprehensive collection of training and materials that help correctional agencies throughout the country meet PREA requirements successfully.
Corrections History Collection
With an eye toward preserving stories from the past for future leaders in corrections, NIC’s collection of historic corrections documents details the social and legislative influences that marked notable events in America’s correctional past.
