Librarianship in Corrections

white-female-officer-sharing-book-with-inmate.png

Library services in correctional facilities offer a variety of resources for men and women in prisons, jails, and community corrections. These libraries provide access to materials that help enhance or maintain literacy skills. Each Federal Bureau of Prisons facility includes leisure and law libraries, staffed by at least one trained librarian. This framework supports a correctional library program that demonstrates the positive impact of libraries on criminal justice outcomes across the country.

The National Institute of Corrections encourages collaboration among criminal justice organizations, library services, and academia to advance the field. Supporting library professionals helps improve services and contributes to the overall growth of the profession.

A special thanks goes to the Bureau of Prisons for the photograph.
