Correctional Staff Response to Medical Emergencies is a webinar series focused on the early moments of a medical emergency in the correctional environment, when non-medical staff are often the first to recognize that something is wrong and begin the response process. The series explores how correctional staff can effectively support medical efforts during these critical periods, particularly before medical personnel arrive on scene.

Drawing on lessons learned from advances in tactical military medicine, the series focuses on principles that are transferable to correctional settings, such as early recognition of life-threatening conditions, prioritization under stress, and the importance of timely coordination. The sessions emphasize decision-making, communication, and support functions rather than hands-on medical treatment, recognizing the operational realities of secure environments.

A central theme of the series is that effective medical emergency response in corrections is a shared organization responsibility. Custody staff, supervisors, leadership all play critical roles through situational awareness, scene control, communication, and coordination with medical staff. Even when correctional staff are not providing direct care, their actions can significantly influence outcomes.

By using medical emergencies as a starting point for institutional conversation, Correctional Staff Response to Medical Emergencies encourages facilities to examine their own policies, training practices, and operational constraints. The goal is to promote thoughtful, policy-aligned preparedness that strengthens collaboration between correctional and medical staff and supports effective response during emergencies.

This series does not qualify, certify, or authorize participants to perform medical procedures beyond their existing training, job classification, or institutional policy. Instead, it is designed to support informed discussion among correctional staff and leadership about what support actions may be appropriate, realistic, and defensible within their specific legal, regulatory, and policy frameworks. The emphasis is on understanding roles and responsibilities, not expanding scope of practice.
