Older incarcerated individuals require a different level of care because of potential age-related cognitive impairments, such as dementia. The age-related cognitive impairments that occur with dementia can create distress and anxiety as an individual attempts to make sense of the present; this can cause sudden physical violence with little warning. De-escalation training for incarcerated adults with dementia focuses on anticipating challenging behaviors and communicating with individuals by using specialized, evidence-based approaches.
In this webinar, we will receive insight into the innovative efforts of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Collins, CO, in developing an inter-agency strategy with community human services agencies to engage with aging adults. The strategy uses an evidence-based framework aimed at improving the quality of life both for aging adults in custody and the staff with which they interact.
