Rachel Thompson is the Official with Authority over the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Operations. She earned her B.S. with an Area of Concentration in Psychology from Morehead State University in 2002, where she was a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honors Fraternity and President of the Psi Chi National Honors Society in Psychology. In 2004, she earned her M.S. in Exercise & Sports Science from Eastern Kentucky University. She began her career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 2005 as a Recreation Specialist at USP Big Sandy, Kentucky. In 2007, she was promoted to Teacher at USP Big Sandy, and in 2008, she transferred to FMC Lexington, Kentucky. In 2011, she was promoted to Supervisor of Education at FCI Marianna, Florida, where in 2013, her department earned the Industries, Education, & Vocational Training Special Recognition Award for Professional Excellence. In June 2014, she was promoted to Complex Executive Assistant & Camp Administrator at FCC Hazelton, West Virginia. In January 2018, she joined the Executive Staff Team at FCI Greenville, Illinois, as Associate Warden. During her tenure at FCI Greenville, she was the recipient of the Charles E. Samuels, Jr., Directors Award for her excellence in Labor Management Relations. In June 2019, she transferred to FCI Gilmer, West Virginia, as Associate Warden and in November 2020, she was promoted to Warden, LSCI Allenwood, where she served until September 2023. In July 2023, she was selected as SES Warden designee, FCI Fort Dix, New Jersey, and in October was accepted into the Senior Executive Service. In September 2025, she excepted her current assignment with NIC. She is a native of Stanville, Kentucky.
