Emergency Management in Practice: Exercises and Readiness Across the Correctional Workforce Webinar

Exercises play a critical role in emergency preparedness and response by giving the whole emergency management community an opportunity to shape plans, validate capabilities, and identify areas for improvement. Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) offers a consistent framework for managing exercises, from design and development to execution through evaluation and improvement planning.

Using FEMAs HSEEP program, correctional agencies can develop, carry out, and evaluate exercises that align with established preparedness concepts and priorities. These priorities are informed by risk and capability assessments, lessons learned from past incidents, corrective actions, and external requirements. Together, they can guide both long-term exercise program goals and the development and execution of individual exercises.

During this webinar, we will use state-level emergency management operations and concepts such as the National Preparedness Cycle and HSEEP as an example of how your institution can grow its emergency preparation and response capabilities by enhancing its exercise proficiency and how you can help your institution connect with local, regional, and partner organizations. Additionally, we will also show how the time and money your intuition invests into its preparedness will aid you in being better prepared when responding to a real-world emergency.

Everyday Correctional Emergency Management Webinar Series

The Everyday Correctional Emergency Management Webinar Series is a quarterly, virtual educational initiative designed to support the continued development of emergency management capability of the U.S. correctional system. The series is primarily intended for correctional professionals working in federal, state, county, local, and tribal prisons and jails, with secondary relevance to community corrections staff and leadership. Its central purpose is to strengthen a shared understanding of nationally recognized emergency management principles and to explore how those principles can be meaningfully integrated into everyday correctional operations, leadership practices, and decision-making processes. The series is framed at a strategic and organizational level and avoids institution-specific procedures or sensitive operational details, consistent with publicly available federal emergency management doctrine.
