When properly designed and supported by policy, classification systems serve as the foundation for decisions that move individuals successfully through the correctional system. Valid criteria ensure appropriate program placement, which can reduce sentences, create opportunities for meaningful employment, and strengthen family reunification efforts.
The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) is now accepting applications from agencies interested in receiving assistance with reviewing and revalidating their classification instruments. This process will identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for refinement to ensure classification systems remain reliable and effective.
Participating agencies must commit to consistent engagement and provide adequate staff resources to support the work. NIC will provide a subject matter expert to guide the analytical review and revalidation process.
Application Instructions
Interested agencies should submit a technical assistance request via the NIC Technical Assistance page, with the following information:
- Describe the current state of their classification system, and
- Outline the services the agency is seeking from NIC.
