IAEM Annual Conference Presentation: Preparing for an Emergency with a Correctional Facility in Your Community

Emergencies can disrupt entire communities and when a correctional facility is part of that community, it can create challenges. Even though they take many forms, when Americans think of a correctional facility they usually think of a prison or some building built out of grey-colored concrete that is self-sufficient. Effective emergency planning and response require an understanding of the distinct operational, security, and logistical needs of these various facilities. This presentation will help emergency managers better understand how to plan for emergencies involving correctional facilities in their communities. Whether a natural disaster, civil unrest, or a public health crisis, having a correctional facility in your area can create unique challenges for emergency managers. This presentation will provide attendees with essential insights into how to prepare for and respond to emergencies involving correctional facilities. We’ll explain the types of facilities that may be in your area, the importance of factoring them into emergency response planning, and encouraging working with the facility in emergency planning.
