Description of the Program

A one-hour live webinar on the interdisciplinary management of a Fight Bite Injury in the BOP (Occupational Therapy, Nurse Practitioner, Dental) to discuss “Fight bite” injuries. In the correctional environment, these injuries can be costly and result in potential loss of hand function, amputation, or death without timely and appropriate medical treatment.

Course Description

There have been numerous cases of Fight Bite injuries that have been medically mismanaged with delays in appropriate intervention and timely referral to emergency services. The purpose of this presentation is to educate providers on evidence-based evaluation and treatment strategies and the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork in the management of fight bite injuries to maximize cost-avoidance and optimize patient outcomes. 

Objectives

  1. Evaluate an acute fight bite injury and detect 2 indications for emergency medical care.
  2. Recommend 2 early infection prevention measures in the acute management of a fight bite injury.
  3. Employ 3 evidence-based interventions for managing hand edema and stiffness in the rehabilitation of a fight bite injury.
