Safety Matters is designed to raise awareness about and teach the skills needed to work effectively with female inmates. Originally conceived after the passage of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), this training has morphed over time into a skills-based curriculum designed to give line staff skills to effectively manage female inmates. This training provides tools for correctional officers to create a safe environment for women in custodial settings. This training assists corrections leadership and practitioners in their goal to support safety. It builds upon foundational training in female-centric practice and motivational interviewing skills. During this course, participants examine the practical implementation of PREA standards specific to promoting safety, explore key dynamics of Women's behavior and relationships while incarcerated, identify the benefits and challenges of addressing sexual safety in Women's facilities, communicate clearly using relational skills to address inmate social and interpersonal conflicts, and implement practical operational strategies to improve sexual safety in facilities. This training plays a vital role in improving the safety, security, and rehabilitative outcomes of correctional systems, fostering a more effective and humane approach to incarceration and rehabilitation.
The training is designed for line and supervisory staff.
