Bridging the Bars and Barriers: Advancing MOUD in Correctional Health Systems

Session 1: Foundations First – Understanding MOUD in the Correctional Context

Target Audience: Clinical and correctional staff (joint session)
Duration: 60 minutes

Session Objectives:

  • Define MOUD and explain the FDA-approved medications used to treat opioid use disorder.
  • Describe the neurobiology of addiction and the evidence base for MOUD in reducing recidivism, overdose, and mortality.
  • Understand the public health and correctional imperatives for offering MOUD services, including legal and ethical considerations.
  • Dispel common myths and stigmas surrounding MAT in correctional environments.
