The American Correctional Association provides a professional organization for all individuals and groups, both public and private that share a common goal of improving the justice system.

The Bureau of Prisons protects public safety by ensuring that federal offenders serve their sentences of imprisonment in facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and provides reentry programming to ensure their successful return to the community.

The Office of Justice Programs is the largest grantmaking component of the Department of Justice and houses the Department’s criminal and juvenile justice-related science, statistics, and programmatic agencies. OJP is committed to advancing work that furthers DOJ’s mission to uphold the rule of law, to keep our country safe, and protect civil rights. OJP provides federal leadership, funding, and other critical resources to directly support law enforcement, combat violent crime, protect American children, provide services to American crime victims, and address public safety challenges, including human trafficking and the opioid crisis.

CNA conducted a mixed methods study of correctional officer safety and safety equipment, involving qualitative and quantitative methods and four individual research protocols. We used a multi-case study framework, working with seven correctional facilities chosen to be representative across the Northeast, South, Midwest, and West regions of the United States.
