Corrections Crisis Stabilization Training (CCST) is a 40-hour, instructor-led, in-person, evidence-based train-the-trainer program designed to strengthen crisis response in correctional settings. This national multidisciplinary model equips staff with the knowledge and skills to apply trauma-informed strategies when responding to individuals with mental illness and developmental disabilities in jails and prisons.
The curriculum emphasizes three core components:
- De-escalation Techniques: Staff learn practical methods to defuse potentially volatile situations through calm, non-threatening communication. These skills reduce the reliance on physical intervention and serve as a foundation of trauma-informed crisis response.
- Trauma-Informed Care: Participants develop the ability to recognize trauma-related behaviors and respond safely and effectively, minimizing the risk of re-traumatization during crisis encounters.
- Behavioral Health-Integrated Crisis Management: The training incorporates evidence-based behavioral health interventions that address underlying mental health needs - an approach shown to improve rehabilitation, stability, and successful reintegration outcomes.
Together, these elements prepare correctional professionals to manage crises with greater safety, compassion, and effectiveness while supporting the wellbeing of both staff and incarcerated individuals.
