The National Institute of Corrections invites you to join us for a 90-minute webinar titled An Overview and Basic Application of Operational Medicine in the Correctional Setting on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 1:00PM ET. This session will introduce the concept of operational medicine in corrections and preview our fiscal year 2026 three-part webinar series titled Operational Medicine for Prisons and Jails.
R.E.S.T.O.R.E. is a nonprofit organization aimed at helping formerly incarcerated women through the provision of transitional housing. “We were deeply honored to welcome Kendall Rhyne, National Programs Advisor with the Community Services Division of the National Institute of Corrections, to R.E.S.T.O.R.E.,” the organization said in a statement.
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections requested Working with Women 101 training for staff at both of their female facilities and selected staff at headquarters. The training was opened with remarks from Chief of Operations Jason Sparks, Deputy Chief of Operations Kelli Davis, and Administrator of Risk Management Natalie Cooper.
NIC concluded Phase 2 of Correctional Leadership Development training for the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) on July 17, 2025. This training targets the executive-level managers of a correctional organization. It simultaneously engages all levels of agency leadership through internal action-based learning strategies at the individual, team, and agency levels.
NIC partnered with the IDOC to deliver the 2-phase program that began in April 2025. IDOC had 35 (100%) executive leaders from the agency who successfully completed the program.
NIC, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) facilitated phase 1 of Management Development for the Future (MDF) at the Staff Development Academy in Crozier, Virginia, on June 24-26, 2025. The class began with 35 participants from prisons and community corrections. The opening session began at 8 AM on June 24. Fourteen staff from the VADOC executive team participated. All attendees were welcomed by Chief Deputy Director David Robinson. The executive team joined both in person and virtually.
NIC’s Facilitating Behavior Change training took place at the Otisville Correctional Facility in New York on June 24-26, 2025. Participants included 8 participants from the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and 10 participants from the state department of corrections. A BOP chief executive and employee development manager worked with NIC to select and approve participants for this opportunity. One participant from each department was selected to participate in the training.
NIC is conducting a three-day training on Safety Matters 2.0 Training: Managing Relationships in Women’s Facilities on July 23-25, 2025 in Columbia South Carolina for the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SC DOC). In response to a request from the SC DOC, NIC provided a training session one month ago and is back to provide a second training for future trainers within the SC DOC who will be conducting this training throughout the department.

From June 9-13, 2025, sheriffs from around the country participated in the first session of NIC’s National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) Communicating for Impact Course held at the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Provided by NIC in collaboration with the Major County Sheriffs of America, this program focuses on enhancing a sheriff’s ability to inspire, motivate, inform, build trust, and lead change while promoting and supporting their organization’s mission, vision, and values.
On April 29 – May 2, 2025, NIC hosted representatives from 11 states in the latest training of Women Working in Corrections. This program differs substantially from the more traditional programs offered by NIC in several ways, including the use of assessment instruments, team-building exercises, and simulations to reinforce the acquisition of knowledge and skills through active learning.
The National Institute of Corrections recently hosted its Advanced Facilitated Dialogue training program. Twenty-four participants from fifteen agencies across ten states took part in the training, which consisted of a half day of virtual training followed by three days of in-person training at the National Corrections Academy in Aurora, Colorado (April 23, 29 - May 1, 2025).
